Frequently Asked Questions

Laser Therapy Q&A

What is the purpose of laser therapy?

Laser therapy, or photobiomodulation, is the process of photons entering the tissue and interacting with the cytochrome c complex within the cell mitochondria. That interaction leads to a biological cascade that increases cellular metabolism, promoting tissue healing, and decreases pain. It is used for acute and chronic conditions as well as post-activity recovery, and as an option alongside prescription drugs or surgery.

Is laser therapy painful? What does it feel like?

It is not painful. Treatment is administered directly to the skin, because laser light cannot penetrate layers of clothing. You will feel a soothing warmth as the therapy is delivered. Many patients report enjoying the experience, particularly when a massage-ball treatment head is used for what is often called a laser massage.

Is laser therapy safe?

Class IV laser therapy devices were cleared by the FDA in 2004 for the reduction of pain and for increasing micro-circulation. The main risk during treatment is to the eyes, which is why certified protective eyewear is always worn during a session.

How long does a session last?

Usually 3 to 10 minutes, depending on the size, depth, and acuteness of the condition being treated. High-power lasers deliver a therapeutic dose quickly, which keeps sessions short.

How often will I need treatment?

Most plans start with 2 to 3 treatments per week. The benefits of laser therapy are cumulative, so care usually involves early, frequent treatments that become less frequent as symptoms resolve.

How many sessions will I need in total?

Most plans of care involve 6 to 12 treatments, with more needed for longer standing, chronic conditions. Your plan is built around your condition and how you respond to it.

How long will it take until I notice a difference?

Patients often report improved sensation, including a therapeutic warmth and some pain relief, immediately after treatment. For noticeable changes in symptoms and condition, patients should undergo a series of treatments, as the benefits of laser therapy are cumulative from one treatment to the next.
